Currency
The monetary unit is the US Dollar (US$) which is divided into 100 cents. All major credit cards are accepted and travellers cheques in US dollars are recommended (these are accepted as cash in most outlets). It is recommended to arrive in the US with about $100 in cash, including one dollar bills for tipping.
Passports & Visas
A full and valid British passport is required for entry into the United States and all visitors must register for an Electronic System for Travel Authority (ESTA) under the Visa Waiver Program. Please apply for this at: https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov. Please note that you may be denied boarding if you do not have your ESTA and it must be applied for at least 72 hours prior to departure.
Passports must be valid for at least six months from your departure date from the USA.
Nationals from other countries should check passport requirements with the US Embassy at http://london.usembassy.gov
Health Requirements
There are currently no health requirements for British citizens. Please check with your doctor or visit www.dh.gov.uk
Food and Drink
In the USA, tips are not included in the bill, and some people rely exclusively on tips for their income. As a general guide, in bars and restaurants, the norm is a minimum of 15% of the bill. Taxi drivers expect a similar tip, porters $1 per bag and chambermaids $1 or $2 per day of your stay.
Smoking is banned in the USA in most indoor public spaces, including restaurants and bars. Las Vegas tends to have a slightly more relaxed attitude, however, and smoking is generally permitted in casinos and most restaurants.
Drinking laws are strict in the USA and if you are under 21 you are not able to buy alcohol. If you are over 21 but look younger, you need to carry some identity with you to prove your age.
Gaming Etiquette
Mobile phones are not allowed whilst seated at a casino game or in the betting shop section of casinos. It is generally best not bring personal electronic items into a casino.
