Lions Tour Group Makes Donation to Soweto
03 Jul 2009 -
The Hippo Orange tour, who were in South Africa for the 1st and 2nd Lions Tests may be back in the UK now but their legacy lives in South Africa, after the kind gesture they made on tour to help develop rugby in Soweto Township.
A Gullivers tour tradition, the group did sweepstakes to predict the score line for the Emerging Boks game and 2nd Test and instead of the winner takes all, the group decided they would use the money pledged to buy rugby balls for some of Soweto's schools.
Gullivers' Hippo Orange tour manager, Jonathan Young said: "It was the group's idea to donate the money to Soweto in the form of rugby balls - everyone in the group had such a fantastic time in this amazing country that they wanted to give something back to the less fortunate children of Soweto and help the township schools to develop rugby."
The rugby balls will be handed over to the schools at Gullivers Barbarians event at Soweto RFC on Saturday 4 July, prior to the 3rd Test in Johannesburg, where a development clinic for Soweto school boys is also being held, as well as traditional South African entertainment for Gullivers' 2000 Lions fans.
As the venue for our Barbarians match against the Soweto Legends, in conjunction with our South African partner Edusport Travel, Gullivers are proud to have contributed to the new changing facilities at Soweto Rugby Club.
