Knighthood for Lions Legend Ian McGeechan
31 Dec 2009 -
British & Irish Lions rugby legend Ian McGeechan is knighted for his tremendous services to sport in the 2010 New Year Honours List.
Ian McGeechan has become synonymous with the Lions, both as a player and a coach. Playing in the 1974 and 1977 Lions teams and coaching four Lions tours, he won three of his seven Lions test series.
The knighthood ends a year which saw McGeechan return as coach for the British & Irish Lions Tour to South Africa 2009, described as one of the closest fought Lions battles in recent times, leaving the Lions in a 2-1 Series defeat.
Gullivers’ Gareth Chilcott, who was part of McGeechan’s 1989 victorious Lions team in Australia said: “I am absolutely thrilled for Geech, a true Lion through and through. What a fantastic way to end his Lions career!”
