Passports & Visas
A full passport is required and should be valid for 6 months beyond intended length of stay.  Visas are not required for Chile for UK passport holders (for a stay of up to 90 days).  Other nationalities should check with the Chilean Embassy. You are advised to keep a photocopy of your passport.

Health
Currently no vaccination certificates are required for travel to Chile. However, immunisation against Polio, Hepatitis A and Typhoid are recommended. Also check with your local doctor as to whether there is any need for vaccination against Cholera.

Currency
The Chilean currency is the Chile Peso, with 100 Centavos equalling 1 Peso.  Paper currency is issued in 500, 1000, 2000, 5000, 10000 & 20000. Coins are issued in 1, 5, 10, 50, 100 & 500 Peso. There are no restrictions on the import or export of local and foreign currency.
Most major credit cards are honoured in Chile, but visitors are advised to check with their own banks before leaving home.  When travelling anywhere abroad, it's safer to keep the bulk of your money in the form of Travellers’ Cheques although there may be some difficulty exchanging them outside of major towns in Chile. AMT cash withdrawals may not always be possible. .

Weather
Much of Chile has a mountain climate with continual snow and glaciers in the higher areas.  The north of the country is desert where the lowlands form one of the driest regions in the world, it is warm during the day but can be quite cool by night. Central Chile has a Mediterranean type climate with warm summers and fairly mild winters (April-September).  The southern region is densely forested with a changeable cool, wet climate. Much of this area is very wet throughout the year with rain falling as snow on the higher peaks. On the coast winters are rarely very cold.

Clothing
Lightweights in northern and central areas with rainwear for the winter. Medium weights and rainwear for the south. Please ensure that upon entry into the country that all sports/walking shoes are clean and free of mud as they may be confiscated to be disinfected which may take several days and will incur a charge to the owner.
