Johannesburg
Johannesburg
A city of many contrasts, Johannesburg is the economic powerhouse of Africa. It is a huge metropolitan area where wealth and poverty live side by side. Its most famous township area is Soweto, established by the apartheid government to the south-west of the city.
Although it is rarely associated with the great outdoors, Johannesburg has its share of nature reserves and pleasant parks which hug the outskirts of the city. Due to the city’s location on the mineral rich Witwatersrand mountain range, Johannesburg is the site of a large-scale gold and diamond trade.
There are a number of attractions which are worth a visit, including the Apartheid Museum, which details the history of the country and the struggle it had only a decade ago, and Gold Reef City which displays a reconstruction of Johannesburg during the Gold Rush era. And if you’re looking for the shops, head to Sandton, the largest non-metropolitan shopping centre in the Southern Hemisphere.
